 WHAT IS ORGAN DONATION

Organ transplant is a procedure in which a healthy organ is surgically implanted into a patient suffering from end-stage disease of any organ. It is one of the major achievements of medical science. The organs & tissues such as heart, lung, kidney, liver, pancreas, cornea, skin can be successfully removed from the deceased & grafted in another individuals for therapeutic purposes.

The success rate of such procedures is now very high and many lives are being saved with transplants. Even children can now receive transplants. Following the transplant, individuals can go back to a normal life.

Through the miracle of transplantation, many of our friends, neighbors and family are living healthy, productive lives. However, the need for donated organs and tissues continues to outpace the supply. Right now, there are thousands of people who could be helped if more of us were to become organ and tissue donors. Organ and tissue donations provide each of us with a special opportunity to help others.
